The cult of celebrity and the pursuit of physical perfection is encouraging higher numbers of people to borrow to achieve the body beautiful, it has emerged.

According to new research from Abbey, Britons currently plan to take out loans worth a collective £1.4 billion for the purposes of cosmetic surgery.

As many as one million adults in the UK are considering getting into debt in an attempt to achieve a quick fix on their bodies.

The most popular procedure for which such loans are being taken out is breast augmentation, the bank states - accounting for 27 per cent of all plastic surgery operations.

This is followed by tummy tucks and nose jobs, or rhinoplasty.

Paul Morrish, head of Abbey Loans, comments: "We are seeing an increase in requests to borrow for plastic surgery.

"Whether striving for visible perfection or as part of a medical treatment, plastic surgery is getting more and more popular amongst Britons."

Meanwhile, Axa recently announced that, with the stigma surrounding plastic surgery fast receding, almost a quarter of a million retirees are also considering going under the knife.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18317592-ADNFCR
