The risk of damage being caused to family homes by children and pets increases if there is bad weather at half-term, it has been warned.

According to Sainsbury's Bank, the combined cost of repairing damage caused over the school holiday could reach £106 million.

One way of meeting these costs could be through secured home loans, which release equity from the property in order to meet financial pressures.

Soft furnishings are not the possessions most at risk, a study from the financial services provider reveals.

More structural parts of the house such as walls, floors and carpets are the most likely to be damaged by off-school children.

Head of home insurance Steve Johnson comments: "If the weather is poor and they have to spend more time indoors, the chances of your home being damaged in some way by them or their friends increases."

Despite the additional funds which may be obtained via secured home loans, the Building Societies Association reveals that many young households neglect the potential financial return to be had from their properties.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18320943-ADNFCR
