Utility bills could be reduced by as much as a third by implementing energy-efficient home improvements, according to British Gas.

While regulations require new construction projects to be environmentally aware, British Gas urges owners of existing buildings to consider improving their insulation.

Figures from the firm show that less than a quarter (22 per cent) of homes in 2050 will have been built after 2007 - meaning 78 per cent may not conform to the energy requirements.

But the extra funds provided through a homeowner loan could offer enough to meet the cost of improving efficiency - and may reduce energy bills by up to a third.

"For every £3 we spend heating our homes £1 is wasted because of poor insulation," explains managing director Phil Bentley.

"Whilst strict standards on new-build [housing] are needed, most of the energy being consumed is in the ageing homes we live in today."

For Britons not looking to purchase a new-build property, homeowner loans could be the key to improving the insulation of an existing house.

British Gas parent company Centrica was recently recognised as being among the leading energy firms looking to tackle climate change.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18322113-ADNFCR
