Up to 50 per cent of all households could be paying more than they need to for their utilities, it has been stated.

Graham Self, director of UK Power, warns that research conducted by energy watchdog Ofgem found half of Britons have never switched their utility supplier.

And for those looking to save money in order to meet repayments on lending such as secured loans, the advice could prove useful.

Mr Self asserts that there are ways to reduce energy bills without needing to switch supplier.

"There are two ways of saving money on your gas and electricity bills - one way is to pay less for it and the other is to use less of it," he observes.

For households opting for the latter approach, he suggests switching appliances off at the mains rather than putting them on standby.

"People would be surprised about how much that actually does save," he concludes - with the surplus funds potentially useful for clearing secured loans ahead of schedule.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18334220-ADNFCR
