Many Britons are unwilling to spend on their home to make it environmentally friendly, it has been revealed.

Research conducted by Norwich and Peterborough building society found that 81 per cent of people would make a new property include features such as solar panels.

But of the remainder, almost half (46 per cent) cited cost as a major obstacle to such ecological improvements being made.

Secured home loans could be a means of funding such efforts by using property as collateral for new lending.

Richard Lloyd, managing director of surveyor Hockleys Professional, comments on the findings: "Adding green features to your home may seem like additional cost."

But he stresses the possible savings to be made in the long run - with secured home loans again a potential way to provide funds in the short-term.

"You need to remember that you can make a difference with simple, relatively cheap methods such as energy-saving light bulbs or improving insulation," Mr Lloyd explains.

The financial services provider states that the UK's housing currently produces more than a quarter (27 per cent) of the total national carbon emissions each year.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18344869-ADNFCR
