Everybody should have access to home insurance, regardless of their income, it has been claimed.

Malcolm Tarling, press officer for general insurance at the Association of British Insurers, asserts that nobody should be financially excluded.

His comments follow the publication of statistics by the industry body showing that 35 per cent of low-income households have no insurance.

But taking on the short-term expenditure of acquiring cover could prove sensible in the long run if possessions were to be lost or stolen.

Homeowner loans may be the ideal solution for many Britons looking to meet the costs of obtaining such insurance.

About one in four households have no contents insurance as "people often think they can't afford it", Mr Tarling observes.

"But if they understood how to shop around they would see that there is cover available," he concludes.

For those consumers who find the cost of home insurance is out of their financial reach, homeowner loans could be an option to spread the cost of purchasing cover.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18346819-ADNFCR
