Most Britons opt to turn to the internet when researching ways of approaching their personal finance situations, it has emerged.

Research conducted by Birmingham Midshires reveals that the majority (55 per cent) of people now consult internet sources ahead of other services such as independent financial advisers.

About one in five will spend more than three hours online looking up topics such as savings and mortgages - which could extend to more complex products such as secured home loans and debt consolidation.

"The internet has empowered consumers to do their own homework before they commit to a financial product," comments managing director of mortgages Tim Hague.

But he cautions consumers against missing out on expert advice completely: "It is important to remember that not everyone is the same."

Recent research from the financial services provider found that the concept of a "typical" Briton is becoming less relevant as individuals lead more diverse lifestyles.

As a result, those considering secured home loans or debt consolidation could stand to benefit more than ever from expert advice.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18354838-ADNFCR
