The sooner Britons install insulation, the sooner they can expect to see a reduction in their energy bills, it has been suggested.

Neil Marshall, chief executive of the National Insulation Association, claims that winter is the ideal time to consider fitting insulation.

With the onset of the colder weather comes an increase in heating costs - which may be reduced by insulating effectively - he advises.

Such efforts could also raise the value of a property and the maximum secured home loan which may be taken out against it.

"We're really moving into the heavy quarters in terms of energy bills," Mr Marshall contends.

The association indicates that insulating solid walls in particular - those built with brick or concrete, for example - can add value to a home.

Meanwhile, as those sorts of wall lose about 45 per cent of the total heat from a property, the savings on energy bills could be substantial.

Secured home loans may also prove an effective means of obtaining the funds required to install insulation, as Mr Marshall observes "insulation is there for life" and as such offers a long-term saving.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18356956-ADNFCR
