The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has claimed that there exists much the government can do to protect UK homes from flooding.

It advises the government to spend £800 million earmarked for use up to 2011 immediately to prevent future flooding, urging expenditure on arranging designated areas for flood waters and not building properties in flood zones.

Graeme Trudgill, technical services manager at Biba, said: "So much can be done but the government don't seem to be quite there at the moment."

He added that the UK is one of the only countries worldwide that offers flood protection as a standard part of home insurance, but said that this may not continue without future government funding on flood defences.

Households without sufficient cover may need to take out a secured loan to repair their properties following flooding this summer that affected 60,000 homes, according to reports from the BBC.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18360925-ADNFCR
