Many homeowners could face a difficult Christmas if they fail to properly protect their property from the impending cold weather, a new survey has suggested.

The study, put together by Cornhill Direct, found that many households do not have full protection against the elements.

Some 43 per cent of respondents admitted that their water pipes are without protective lagging and 30 per cent fail to properly safeguard their water tank.

The research also found that in the event of a burst pipe some people could be paying out as much as £3,500 in repairs.

Such a cost could be made more affordable with secured loans, which can use property as equity to provide funds for a variety of purposes.

With many first-time buyers counting the cost of a new home, the extra expense of insulating and protecting a property can mean that secured loans ease the burden of home improvement.

A recent survey conducted by Abbey found that 39 per cent of people said they would be prepared to take on an extra job to secure a place on the property ladder with 16 per cent saying they would consider taking on a third.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18363265-ADNFCR
