Consumers with bad debt could find Christmas drives them "over the edge", it has been warned.

Financial charity the Consumer Credit Counselling Service suggests that the festive season alone is unlikely to present a severe monetary obstacle to many Britons.

However, those with pre-existing debts could be more at risk as they have less freedom to cover Christmas costs.

Spokesperson James Ketchell explains: "A debt problem is very rarely caused solely by Christmas.

"When people have £30,000 to £40,000 worth of consumer debt, one Christmas doesn't make a difference but it might be the tipping point."

He adds that January is the peak time for many Britons to seek assistance in tackling their personal debt.

Debt consolidation loans may be one way in which this could be achieved for consumers who have reached the limits of affordability.

By combining all borrowing into a single monthly repayment, debt consolidation loans can typically reduce the amount which must be repaid in each instalment.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18364682-ADNFCR
