Scottish people could find themselves confronted with larger debts after the festive period is over following research that revealed them to be top of the tree when it comes to present giving.

Abbey has found that Scots are the most generous gift givers at Christmas time, with an average spend of £480 per person. The next most generous - those in Wales and the south-west - had an average spend of £415.

"Not surprisingly, children top the bill as parents splash out at Christmas, but interestingly there were also quite significant regional differences," said Steve Shore, head of banking at Abbey.

Children were beneficiaries on whom people splashed the money most in all regions of Britain apart from in the south-east, where more was spent on average on partners.

Work colleagues were most likely to get a raw deal in the Midlands and north, where an average of £7.59 and £7.57 are spent respectively, while in Scotland this rises to £14.52, suggesting this festive generosity could contribute to Scots' debt.

Research from Credit Expert last week suggested that 76 per cent of Brits will be spending the same or more on Christmas presents this year, despite higher interest rates.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18371951-ADNFCR
