Consumers in the UK forget about bank accounts if the balance is not significant, it has been claimed.

Jason Clarke, spokesperson for Halifax, suggests that unclaimed accounts tend to be those into which only a small amount of money has been deposited.

His comments follow figures from the British Bankers' Association which show that nearly a quarter of a million people have now used the organisation's online unclaimed assets search facility.

Reclaiming funds which are rightfully theirs could help many Britons to meet demands on lending such as secured loans.

"There's a lot of money sat in accounts which to all intents and purposes has been forgotten about," Mr Clarke asserts.

"The majority of these accounts will have very little money in them," he adds, suggesting a balance of less than £100.

Such a sum could still prove useful to consumers with secured loans, however, as they look to service their monthly repayments.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18373416-ADNFCR
