The sub-prime lending crisis has caused the "dream of home ownership" to turn sour for many Britons, according to Citizens Advice.

Figures from the advisory service show an annual increase of 11 per cent in the number of consumers looking for assistance with their mortgage repayments.

"Dubious advice from brokers, irresponsible lending decisions and aggressive arrears management by sub-prime lenders" are all given as reasons why such a situation may have developed.

However, for individuals facing short-term funding issues, a homeowner loan could see their property become the cure - and not the cause - for their situation.

The Council of Mortgage Lenders adds that the Citizens Advice report is "too simplistic" in blaming the crisis on secured home loan providers.

According to the council: "The vast majority of mortgage customers receive a high level of help and care from lenders of all kinds if they fall into difficulties."

Such an assertion may be welcomed by consumers considering a homeowner loan as a means of funding their way through the current sub-prime crisis.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18391453-ADNFCR
