The proliferation of new construction of flats is no bad thing for first-time buyers, it has been claimed.

A spokesperson for the National Housing Federation explains that more affordable properties are an ideal way for first-time buyers to get on to the housing ladder.

This could allow them to build up equity in their property, allowing them access to lending such as homeowner loans.

"Flats are fine for the people who need them - and they are probably a very affordable option for first-time buyers," he comments.

He adds that the greater proportion of flats is helping to drive up the value of homes suitable for a larger family.

Owners of such properties could thus find they are able to obtain a larger homeowner loan than was previously the case.

But for those who have to look further afield for a house they can afford, the news might not be so welcome.

"This is where building family accommodation in city centres would be a good thing," the spokesperson concludes.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18393514-ADNFCR
