Debt worries should be discussed, according to Engage Mutual.

A survey from the financial services provider shows that 22 per cent of Britons with partners have a secret about their finances they are unwilling to share with their husband, wife or co-habitant.

Topping the list of these underhand money matters is credit card debt, said to be kept under wraps by 36 per cent of those surveyed.

However, the organisation claims that sharing fiscal troubles is an essential part of a stable financial life, especially for couples with children, who the study indicates are the most likely to keep secrets from each other.

"Choosing financial products as a couple and going through finances together can help to keep communications open," says Karl Elliot, 3GB spokesperson for the firm.

Couples who share a home may find their debt worries alleviated by a secured loan, which moneysupermarket.com predicts may be popular in 2008.
