Negative credit ratings can be rectified by registering to vote, an Equifax representative has advised.

Neil Munroe, external affairs director with the organisation, described registering on the electoral roll as one of the "basic things" it is possible to do to improve one's credit rating.

The electoral roll is used by loan providers to identify people, Mr Munroe explained, noting that when approving loans financial services providers want to guard against fraud as well as identify responsible borrowers.

"Lenders, when they're checking people out, don't just make a credit decision - they want to check that it is the right person, because of the increase in instances of identity theft and fraud," he said.

The Department for Constitutional Affairs estimates that there were at least 550,000 unregistered voters in London in 2006, with one in four people under the age of 24 in the capital not registered to vote.
