The cost of getting hitched tends to come as a surprise to engaged couples, according to new research.

Budget shortfalls could reach 22 per cent, new research from Alliance & Leicester has found.

The average nuptial ceremony costs £19,400, which is £3,500 more than the average predicted amount of £15,927, the firm pointed out.

Richard Al-Dabbagh, head of personal loans with the financial services provider, reminded people planning a marriage to consider the financial implications carefully.

"Love is in the air, but so is inflation," he said.

"Getting the finances right is probably just as important as the choice of reception venue, entertainment or even the rings," the representative added.

The personal loans expert added that loans could be a savvy choice for couples looking to fund a wedding sensibly.

And MoneyExpert.com recently advised that the rates available on secured loans make them a feasible alternative to unsecured lending.
