More than half of drivers recently surveyed by Halifax spend at least £30 a week on fuel.

The poll revealed that over 50 per cent of motorists put fuel in their vehicle at least once a week, with one-fifth of respondents claiming to spend less than £20 a week on petrol.

Meanwhile, 23 per cent invest between £21 and £30 on oil for their vehicle, with 20 per cent spending between £31 and £50 and eight per cent spending more than £50 each week.

Residents of Yorkshire and Humberside were the most likely to buy car tax online across all regions (44 per cent), with 45 per cent of residents of Anglia claiming to have never purchased tax on the web and would not do so in the future.

Adrian Bryant from Halifax Credit Cards asserts that the results are indicative of the importance of considering funding options even after buying a new vehicle.

"People can spend some time thinking about how they are going to finance the purchase of a new car but as this survey shows, it is also important to consider how you intend to finance smaller motoring purchases such as petrol, tax and maintenance," he says.

Meanwhile, separate research from the company recently found that a fifth of potential car buyers would choose to finance their purchase with a loan.
