Prospective motorists could find that learning puts a strain on their budgets with the new Driving Standards Authority (DSA) test hikes, one price comparison service observes.

Theory tests are to increase from £28.50 to £30 and practical exams from £48.50 to £56.50 from April 1st, notes uSwitch.com.

According to the resource, learners will therefore need to spend an extra £14.4 million to sit tests, earning the DSA an extra £128 million a year.

Taking the costs of a provisional licence, driving lessons and test fees into account, learning to drive costs £1,337, the organisation states.

When car purchases, motor insurance and maintenance are factored in, the figure rises further.

Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert with the site, asserts: "New drivers shouldn't be under any illusions - learning to drive carries a hefty price tag."

New Sainsbury's Bank research indicates that 30 per cent of car buyers intend to fund their purchase by taking out a loan.
