Parents are putting themselves and their children at risk in a bid to reach the school gates on time, a new report warns.

Research from Sainsbury's Car Insurance found that 15 per cent of people admit to having failed to secure a child in the appropriate seating when driving them to school, with eight per cent of those polled having experienced an accident on the way to school in the past five years.

Joanne Mallon, car insurance manager with the firm, said that the journey to school can be one of the most stress-inducing for motorists.

"Busy roads, children being noisy in the back seat and the worry of being late for school or work can all lead to stress that can affect people's driving," she said.

A study carried out by Sainsbury's in March of this year found that about 30 per cent of people planning to buy a vehicle in the next six months intended to take out a loan to boost their budget.
