People in rented property must ensure their dwelling is installed with good security features, according to one industry representative.

Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line home insurance, said that tenants must discuss such practical features with their landlords to ensure that both the building and the contents of the property are protected.

Most landlords will be more than pleased to make such a "wise investment", he suggested.

However, tenants also need to ensure their home contents are covered - the costs of doing so are often cheaper than may be assumed, Mr Lowe said.

"Insurance companies may charge higher premiums for homes in areas targeted by burglars," the expert added.

Burglaries in England and Wales fell by 59 per cent between 1995 and 2006/07, figures from the Home Office suggest.

According to price comparison website Moneyfacts, homeowner loans may be a viable funding option for people who hold equity in property, such as landlords.
