Drivers in Wales and the south-west are three times as likely to own energy-efficient vehicles as people in London, a new report suggests.

According to research by Tescocompare.com, 12 per cent of the population in Wales and the south-west own a car that exerts a relatively low impact on the environment.

The report also discovered that two-thirds of people would think about purchasing a low-emission motor if they could do so at a competitive price, or if such a purchase would result in lower driving costs.

In light of the results, the company is asking the government to cut insurance premium tax for environmentally-friendly cars and to consider other incentives that may encourage drivers to pursue more ecologically efficient road habits.

"Our research clearly shows the nation's motorists are much more likely to go green if it saves them money as well as saving the planet," said Paul Baxter of the site.

MoneyExpert.com has suggested that 6.5 million people have pursued debt consolidation loans as a route out of financial trouble in the past three years.
