The company Which? has advised that by taking simple steps, drivers can help cut their motoring costs.

Motorists can save 30 per cent on their fuel bill by driving at 50mph rather than 70mph, according to the consumer guide.

They can also cut fuel costs by switching off the air conditioning, only using a roof-rack when essential and making sure they are always driving in the appropriate gear.

Tony Levene of Which? said: "If you can reduce your fuel bill by a couple of pounds each journey by making a few simple changes to the way you drive or use your car, why not?"

With the cost of running a car at an all time high, those looking to buy a new vehicle may benefit from taking out a homeowner loan.

Meanwhile, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) revealed that new car registrations in the UK in March crept up 0.5 per cent despite the credit crunch.
