Sales of motorcycles in the UK increased last month, a new report indicates.

According to figures from the Motor Cycle Industry Association, registrations of motorcycles, mopeds and scooters increased by 10.2 per cent compared to the same month last year.

Registrations of powered two wheelers stood at 13,747 - an increase of 1,269 on the corresponding 2007 number.

Meanwhile, moped registrations were up 49.7 per cent and scooters were up 42.3 per cent.

The association's Craig Carey-Clinch commented that the figures indicate a "very healthy market".

He added: "There are also strong signs that people are looking for viable alternatives to putting up with traffic jams or crowded public transport, recognising the use and cost advantages of two wheels."

A report published by Sainsbury's in March of this year suggested that, of the total amount of money invested in vehicles by Britons over the following six months, about 18.2 per cent would be financed through loans.
