People are being hit with excessive charges on top of their car insurance costs, a new report warns.

Research from price comparison website uSwitch.com has discovered that more than 14 million drivers in the UK are being issued with fees worth a total of £333 million each year for amending their policies.

The average mid-term adjustment fee is some £22, the online consumer price monitor points out.

According to the site, insurers should acknowledge that such excessive charges are unfair and act to change the way in which bills are calculated.

"Consumers need to know where they stand and consistency needs to be enforced across the industry - either these fees are unfair, or they aren't," the web portal asserts.

In related news, research conducted by MoneyExpert.com last September found that 24 per cent of parents have assisted their offspring with car finance, while two per cent have helped daughters and sons with home equity loans.
