The housing market is weighted in favour of buyers, according to one specialist in self-building.

Julian Brooks, managing director of Green Moves UK, commented that buyers should be able to negotiate a good price for the home, plot or derelict property of their choice.

Anyone wanting to purchase a plot of land to build on or an old property to knock down and rebuild should consider now as a good time to do so, he said.

But Mr Brooks pointed out that the planning system is likely to view green building projects more favourably than traditional initiatives.

"They do look more favourably upon exceptional sustainable housing projects compared to just any old house builder putting up their standard fare,” he said.

Loans from the Ecology Building Society for green projects doubled last year on 2006, with gross lending at £15 million and net loan distribution at £9.7 million.
