A growing number of British tourists are choosing to take their summer breaks in the UK, a new study suggests.

Research from Confused.com indicates that Londoners are among the most likely to choose their homeland for a seasonal break, with 32 per cent of residents of the capital heading out on UK holidays more than once a year.

The corresponding figure for Birmingham is 37 per cent, with 34 per cent of Manchester residents travelling within the UK at least twice a year.

Meanwhile, 10 per cent of Newcastle inhabitants holiday within the British isles more than four times in 12 months.

Debra Williams, managing director of the site, said that the rate of UK holidaymaking is high despite the increasingly inexpensive cost of travelling abroad.

"With driving the UK's favoured mode of transport, when it comes to short-haul breaks, it is important for drivers to become increasingly vigilant on the roads, as the great british getaway steps up a gear with the May Bank Holiday and summer fast approaching," she added.

According to Moneyfacts in 2006, secured loans can be a valuable way of funding larger purchases.
