A growing number of UK tourists are taking their families on driving holidays, a new study indicates.

Research from the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) indicates that nine per cent of Brits are considering going on a driving trip in Europe, with France emerging as the most popular destination for such trips.

Meanwhile, 32 per cent of people want to go on a caravan break and travel to their destination by car, with 27 per cent of those polled willing to think about a camping trip if they could reach the site by car.

Abta suggests that short ferry check-in times and the freedom associated with vehicles is driving a growing interest in such holidays.

Chris Rolland, head of American Express Insurance Services, said: "For many hard working Britons it seems there are simply not enough hours in the day. For some, long working days means that they don't want to waste any more time than necessary with long check-in times."

A study conducted by MoneyExpert.com in September of last year found that two per cent of parents have helped their offspring with secured loan debt, compared to 24 per cent who have assisted sons and daughters with car finance.
