Motorists have been advised to spend time planning their journeys to reduce the likelihood of an accident.

According to price comparison website Confused.com, being involved in an accident can have a detrimental effect on car insurance premiums as well as physical health.

Drivers with three points on their licence will see their premiums rise by an average of seven per cent, while those with six points will witness price hikes of 25 per cent.

Meanwhile, the number of companies willing to insure somebody with nine points on their licence may be halved, with premiums rising by 50 per cent for so many offences.

The company's comments came as it published a survey finding that almost one in five people called James or William have driving convictions.

Sainsbury's research published in March of this year found that about a third of people planning to purchase a vehicle in the next half-year were intending to finance at least a proportion of the transaction with a loan.
