UK householders are leaving their DIY home projects unfinished, a new report asserts.

New research from Halifax indicates that more than 1.7 million people have lived with an unfinished home renovation project for more than 24 months, with almost a quarter of a million leaving a refurbishment unfinished for more than a decade.

Unfinished bathrooms reside in the homes of 2.5 million people, while 2.8 million people are living with a half-finished kitchen.

Bedrooms emerged as the most likely site of an abandoned renovation, with 38 per cent of people sleeping in a room they once had greater plans for.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at the company, comments that being realistic about the budget of a DIY project raises the likelihood of its completion.

"Employing a professional tradesperson can be an effective strategy to ensure work is completed on time, on budget and to an acceptable standard," he says.

According to Moneyfacts, secured loans can be an effective way to acquire larger fund amounts for big projects.
