As the debate about bank overdraft charges and their relationship to consumer debt continues, new research from MoneyExpert.com reveals that 30 per cent of customers would prefer such fees to paying for a current account.

The high court is currently considering whether the level of charges levied on customers in these circumstances is fair.

As the case goes on, MoneyExpert.com is warning that if banks are forced to cease charging customers for overdrawing their accounts, they could introduce other fees - such as those for maintaining a current account - to avoid losing profits.

According to the comparison website's survey, those who have never paid an overdraft charge or have only done so on a few occasions are more likely to prefer that the current system continues.

Sean Gardner, founder of MoneyExpert.com, said that on the other hand "people who've paid charges are also understandably keen to get their money back and are convinced the banks have been unfair".

Figures from uSwitch.com reveal that Britons are paying a total of £93 billion in interest on loans, credit cards, overdrafts and mortgages.ADNFCR-1287-ID-18614859-ADNFCR
